Chilliwack Mountain/Westside

Views of either Fraser River or western valley
Away from busyness of town & suburbs
Only 10 mins to either downtown on the north or malls to the south

Located west of Chilliwack between the Trans Canada Hwy and the Fraser River, Chilliwack Mountain offers a chance to get away from the main corridors yet has the convenience of being only a short drive to shopping and services in either Chilliwack or Sardis.

The property types have become quite varied over the years. The first homes in this area were developed primarily in the 1960s on small and medium-sized acreages that for the most part capitalized on views of the mighty Fraser. In recent years more intensive development saw the introduction of strata communities both bareland strata lots and townhouse projects. Maple Hills, The Trails at Longthorn, Vista Ridge, Westpointe and Retriever Ridge are amongst those stratas. On the northern side of the mountain you will find Sunrise Estates, an area built up in the 90s, and on the topside you will discover Chilliwack Mountain Estates, acreage lots and executive homes which also immerged in that same time frame.  On the south side neighbourhoods of Copper Ridge and Retriever Ridge on residential lots are the latest additions.

There is no commercial development on the mountain at all.

Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve

heron1One of our favourite stops whenever we have out of town visitors is the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve , a 130-hectare site (325 acre) located on the un-dyked floodplain of the Vedder River.  Managed by the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society, the site is known for the breeding colony of Great Blue Herons as well as a wide variety of wildlife and vegetation.

For directions and information on all there is to see and do at this wonderful Chilliwack attraction visit their website here.

party-in-the-park Set in the Central Community Park in downtown Chilliwack, fun and entertainment can be had by all the family, each Friday evening for eight glorious weeks in July and August. It’s a great place to sit back and relax with friends and family, enjoy the weather and the live local bands that grace the stage at this fabulous community event.

Each Party in the Park starts off with the Night Market which is a true testament to locally grown and produced goods. There’s a variety of food vendors to tempt your pallet as well. There are a variety of activities geared to the youngsters, from face-painting to bouncy castles and the organizers make an  effort to cater to a variety of tastes and ages when it comes to the live music offered as well.

Party in the Park is held at the Central Community Park on the corner of Victoria and Young. There are public washrooms on site and it’s easily accessible for those in wheelchairs. Dogs are allowed; just keep them on a leash.

For info on this event, including opportunities to participate in the market or as a volunteer, visit their website here.

garyThe Forest Echoes at Cultus Lake is the home and studio of my favourite artist. I first met Gary Haggquist in 1993 while organizing his solo show at the Chilliwack Art Centre’s Downstairs Gallery. I was immediately captivated by his work and have been a big fan ever since. In writing of his work, Gary says “The natural world has always been my wellspring of inspiration. Memories of exploring the forests of my youth can still flood my senses with the sounds and smells of those wild places on the edge of suburbia.” Through his canvas’s Gary is able to take us with him as he explores this world in such a way that is beautiful to experience but difficult to explain in the limited space I have here. I urge you to see for yourself. Gary is currently represented by the Art Junction Gallery in Whistler and his work is also featured at Grey Area Gallery on Vedder Road.  You can learn more about Gary and see a full spectrum of his work at his new website www.garyhagggquist.com
